Quick assistance for diabetic children
Just before departing from the mountain region in April 2002, a woman visited us, who described us the
fait of her children. Three of them are diabetic children from birth. One of them died about one year ago.
The monthly insulin dose has to be bought in Baguio and costs 850 pisos (14 euros). Because of a
financial disatvantage in the woman's family, we already agreed on paying at least one monthly dose
until her money earns enough interests.
Three months later, the second child died because of diabetes.
At a birthday party in the summer of 2002, we mentioned this case. One of the guests volunteered to become the
godmother of the last child Bianca Kacayon. The woman, who herself is affected by diabetes, did not want to
believe that children in the world still die of this desease.
In April 2003 we visited Bianca again. She is a happy and open-minded girl. But we noticed that her parents
concerned about Bianca's health. Bianca's eyesight is affected by her illness. She does not wear glasses though.
Maybe she feels embarrassed having to wear glasses, as noone else wears any in the whole village.
Bianca and her godmother send pictures and letters to each other.
